We will describe the current methodology used in medical research for systematic literature reviews, describe how the authors of this chapter applied this methodology to a review of the literature on therapeutic communities, discuss some of the findings of this systematic review and reflect on the usefulness of the systematic literature review for therapeutic community research.

This perspective would suggest research questions focussing on the variety of personal and social resources available to therapeutic community clients, and how clients with different resources respond to therapeutic community treatment or to particular types of therapeutic community. For example, family background, gender, psychiatric and health status, educational achievements, knowledge of social and language skills, and ethnicity will all affect the behavioural, cultural and social resources upon which individuals may draw in their interactions with the therapeutic community rules and environment.

A further implication is a broader view of what is classed as data that includes the researchers’ own impressions, feelings and reactions in the research situation. Research becomes a process in which the researcher is involved as a socially situated being and requires not only technical but reflexive and interpersonal skills. Just how important are these philosophical and epistemological differences? This is an issue of continual debate within the social sciences. There are those who believe that differences in assumptions about knowledge and the nature of reality render the two types of research and their findings incompatible.
