It constantly shocks us when we see so many women consciously underplaying their success in a way that almost seems like self-sabotage. We are not saying that this is a universal trait, and we know many women who are exceptions to this rule.

Fifteen years after the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) focused on targets for women in leadership, there has been substantial progress for women in leadership. At best, we will see parity achieved with our daughters who are embarking on their secondary schooling, at worst we will be lucky if our great-granddaughters achieve equality across all levels of leadership. This means there is a great deal more work to be done. This means investing effort to maintain the momentum harnessed over the last 15 years, as well as increasing efforts to speed up the process.

The role of testosterone Testosterone, known as the male hormone, creates the conditions for the main male physical characteristics, early in the life of a foetus in the womb and then again at puberty. Both men and women secrete testosterone, but men on average have about 8–10 times more than women. Testosterone is positively correlated with characteristically male behaviors such as aggression and risk taking, but also with confidence (see Appendix 2). In humans, levels of testosterone alone are not enough to predict dominance, or leadership, and too much testosterone leads to excessive risk taking and aggression.
