This epistemological question about the source, nature and limits of our knowledge is, of course, also relevant to the various approaches to terminating violent conflicts that have emerged over the past decades. 14 In contrast to state-centred strategies, which involve political and military leaders and use coercive measures such as sanctions and arbitration, they focus on the role of individuals (even though these may include civil and military leaders) in conflicts by seeking to change their negative perceptions about each other.

The assessment of the long-term impact of the Teso mediation on social change is continued in Chapter 6. It first describes the responses to the only war memorial to commemorate the insurgency – a mausoleum close to the trading centre of Mukura in Kumi district – and then explores the significance of the invention of the new cultural leader of the Iteso, Papa Emorimor, in order to highlight an innovative way of changing the role of the Iteso in the wider Uganda. Being central to the hermeneutic process of retrieving the past and considering a particular future, both examples, albeit different in scope, serve to illustrate how the people of Teso are dealing with their past today, and how this shapes their prospects for the future.
