He then took a two-year course called higher elementary school. Toda entrusted Ikeda with the leadership of many Soka Gakkai activities from that time. Two notable achievements by Ikeda are the 1952 conversion of 201 new households in Kamata within one month, followed by the conversion of 11,111 households in Osaka in 1956. Concerning private matters, Toda was also instrumental in the marriage of Ikeda and Kaneko Shiraki in 1952. They had three sons (one of them passed away in 1984) and two grandchildren. In 1955 Toda encouraged Soka Gakkai members to run for local elections, and 53 were elected.

Ikeda had to quit school to save Toda from ruin, and Toda offered to tutor Ikeda privately instead, taking care of his education until 1957. ’ In August 1950 Toda had resigned from his position as general director of the Soka Gakkai to protect the organization. Indeed, his businesses had failed and he did not want to damage the credibility of the Soka Gakkai. Within less than a year, on 3 May 1951, with his financial affairs in order, Toda became the second President of the Soka Gakkai. He vowed to turn a small group of 3,000 Buddhists into a vast organization of 750,000 households, and Ikeda took this goal seriously.
